MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF RIVETS

The value of tensile strength depends on the point at which metal fractures. By definition, true tensile strength is determined by applied load divided by cross-sectional area of the part at the time of tear. However, the ultimate tensile strength, specified by testing laboratories, is based on the initial cross-sectional area.

As hardness of the formed metal increases, yield strength and tensile strength both rise. To minimize cracks in clinches of semi-tubular rivets, we use cold heading wire on the softer side of scale (Steel: 50,000 - 60,000 PSI).

To coincide with our specifications, manufacturers of cold heading wire certify tensile strength usually in range between:
Steel: 50,000 - 75,000 PSI
Stainless Steel: 75,000 - 85,000 PSI
Brass: 55,000 - 65,000 PSI
Aluminum: 40,000 - 50,000 PSI

Compare wire sizes here, which we usually keep on stock.

Torque requirements vary considerably, depending on rivet user. For example; a common torque is 4 to 11 inch pounds for series 23 rivets, but may be required as high as 20 inch pounds or more for the same rivet. The highest torque for OEM friction materials may require rivets with partially tapered shanks, like our popular series 2 rivets. Keep in mind that the torque strength is influenced greatly by riveting equipment and its tooling condition.
